Project/Science Updates

PST discussed satellite trails last week.

  • If the new observations from Meredith are correct then then Zeljko Ivezic  estimates we would only lose < 1% of pixels and there would be much less of an impact on the survey than feared.
  • This is good news and should be published however there is still a lack of convergence between Robert L and  Tony T on the details of the cross talk correction and how well we can correct for it. They have been tasked to spend this week on it and come back to the  PST.
  • Colin Slater have phase angle considerations been folded in yet, i.e just taking the magnitude at a given position on the sky does not that it's not brighter
    • Based on arguments from  from Mike Schul at SpaceX, who is developing a ray tracing simulator, we know that they don't vary a lot as they go over the air masses that we care about, maybe up to a mag due to phase effects.
    • There is > 1mag variation though due to the fact that their distance from us is greater.
    • Satellites were observed close to zenith and this is expected to be the maximum brightness they would achieve.
    • Mike Schul will give us  lightcurves from once he trusts the simulator

LSST knowledge base

Review of the  LSST Knowledge Base

  • Gregory has cleaned up of some top-level spaces with Ian to retire many spaces that were defunct but the 'LSST knowledge base is still live
  • It contains the 'DM glossary' and 'Key numbers'. The glossary is outdated, Gregory will remove it
  • Yusra AlSayyad  pointed out:  https://www.lsst.org/scientists/glossary-acronyms
  • The glossary Melissa Graham  produced was in the form of a csv file, which was implemented into the lsst-tex framework. This is not accessible to the general public and other in the project who don't use latex. We should release this glossary in a more user-friendly format.
  • Key numbers - more than just DM, this is project wide.
  • Argualble to maintain key numbers in the same way as for the glossary - appropriate version control system and then make a html/doc
  • Gregory Dubois-Felsmann  remove the outdated glossary from the confluence - (content replaced by a link to the project glossary site 2020-05-11)
  • Gregory Dubois-Felsmann work with Jonathan Sick  to produce a TN for the glossary
  • Gregory Dubois-Felsmann Melissa Graham work with communications on making a jargon-busting glossary for the general public based on the glossary
  • John Swinbank Raise at the Monday managers meeting to determine the policy for the glossary.
  • Leanne Guy take the key numbers to sciency6/PST to determine who is responsible for the project wide scientific content.
Broker proposal call
  • Slides to present:
  • Status of the sample alerts for the broker proposal call
  • Possible extension of the call deadline (15 July

Discussion

  • There is a balance between giving teams more time in these challenging times vs not hindering the ability to secure funds.
  • In-kind partnership with team in Belgrade to deliver streaming tools. This filled a hole in AP team's work,  but it is late and has and has not converged
  • New AP team member now working on delivering one part of the Belgrade deliverable.  Bob being kept appraised.
  • Requesting that broker proposers work with the 2 years of public ZTF alerts would allow us to decouple the sample alerts needed for the broker proposal call from the on-project alert generation work.
  • The broker call was not clear about using ZTF alerts for this –  there is language in the call about using precursor datasets but not specifically ZTF. If we make this the message now.
  • Propose a 6 month delay to the broker proposals.
  • Need to clear both the above with the SAC.
  • HiTS alerts generated in preparation fo the algorithms workshop can be also distributed to supplement the ZTF alerts. Some cleanup is needed, probably available in about 3-4 week
  • Goal is to get a message out to proposers on the 1-2 week timescale

DESC:

  • Alerts proposed by DESC are outside our remit but could be mutually beneficial to both DESC, the project and other science collaborations
  • We will explore working with DESC on this
  • Leanne Guy Contact SAC to have Eric present this to the SAC. SAC
  • Eric Bellm and leanne to work on a proposal for DESC and other SCs
Updates on alerts-related SST tickets (move to next meeting )Melissa Graham
  • Slides to present the following:
  • DM-20296 alert stream pre-filtering
  • DM-20298 alert packet contents
  • DM-20299 alert latency science impacts
  • DM-23683 revising host galaxy associations for DIAObjects

Task review
  • Gregory Dubois-Felsmann and Eric Bellm aim to have an initial sketch for IVOA and Python interfaces to query time series data in both the Prompt and DR data products in the next 2 weeks.   Will  present the plan at the dm-sst meeting 2 weeks before vF2F and give a full presentation at the next DM vF2F meeting.

AOBNo meeting next week (2020-04-13) due to ops review.
