Project/Science Updates

PCW debrief  - feedback and thoughts.

Topics of concern/interest to DM Science

  • Snaps - when will a decision be made and what are the criteria to decide  1x30 or 2x15. Can we document this in advance? Leanne
  • Photo-z  and the use of RAIL. Integrate into the science pipelines or accept as an in-kind contribution? Jim, Melissa
  • Multi-scale postage stamps - Eric – Alerce document
  • Incremental Template Generation - Eric/Leanne
  • Crowded Fields - Colin (after next session)
  • RSP features & functionality prioritization - Gregory
  • What are we doing with AuxTel data
  • Embargoing of templates - what is the accessibility of templates especially in commissioning with the 30day period
  • Frequency of updating templates - we currently plan to update templates every year with every DRP. There has been some feedback from the parts of the  Community that we should never  update templates.
  • Snaps
    • ER: what are the criteria to decide on snaps, when will we decide, can we do it now? Do we have the code ready to run snaps (no)
    • LPG: we will test this in commissioning
    • SR: What is the documented pipeline for CR rejection? The details matter. If it hasn't yet been written down, I would be happy to help with that. Need specific criteria for success with/without snaps.
    • KB: Fiducial plan for what we are doing at the start of commissioning - what is the default position
    • YAS: The test that we would do is - make snaps, get calexp, match one image to another, do CR, match snap 1 to snap 1, detect CR, then do on both and compare. Don't need to the snap handling code in place to so this
    • KB: Note that another dimension of this discussion is impact of snaps on AOS performance and that we probably won’t know until during the AOS closed-loop validation step
  • Photo-z
    • MLG: Don't think we need to integrate RAIL into the science pipelines - it is very extensive. Brazillian team will take the Object catalog and give back photo-zs
  • Multi-scale postage stamps:
    • EB: Host galaxy association and classif + glints are the 2 drivers from MS postage stamps. MS driven by keeping the size of the AP constant. Alerce pushed hard on this at the PCW. DMTN-199 is relevant here. We need to analyse this and send a formal response.
    • EB concerned about scientific rationale and implementation. will do some tests in the coming months.
  • JB: Shear / WL session - we are in sync with the DES folk from DESC but others in DESC were not aware of what we re doing wth them on the shear catalog and the implications for photo-z. Nothing here for us to do.
  • Leanne Guy Schedule follow up of these topics at the SST in future
Status of crowded field processing prototype

LPG: where were the in-kind post-docs "baffled" - technical, pipelines, scientific?

ZI: Did the prototype work correctly with sim data but the problems appeared when trying to process real data?

CTS: Sims version did not do the multiple rounds of detection. Unit tests pass but they only test a single iteration of detection.

ZI: have you used DAOPhot on data that could not be processed?

CTS: All testing was on DECAPS so there was a truth solution, yes

JB:  Have the tried to wrap DECAPS code - the most modern and wrappable off all code.

CTS: Agree. Amazingly effective but the code is hard to work on. Have not thought about wrapping it yet.

JB: Fred has expressed interest in this, scientifically and technically, in particular from a deblending POV

YAS: Fred presented some other ideas in the Friday crowded fields PCW session

EB: Option 4 - see if Scarlett with a strong PS prior yields reasonable results

JB: We don't understand what is going wrong

CTS: not sure it can do better than DAOPhot - DAOPhot makes most use of the information in the image

YAS: Wavelets!

JB: PSF matched filtering is not the best solution in the presence of blending.

LPG: Can we get help with option 1

JB: Like the idea of running one of the codes - but we have DECAPS results

CTS: Option 1 - see this as a week of dedicated effort on this and no more.

CTS: Some groups will run their own code (DAOPhot) - Option 3.

JB: Any progress on doing this earlier in the pipelines.

EB: Successful with a run on a crowed Decam field a few years back - getting it going at the USDF is slow, confidence level is moderate. Want to push on this fall.

JB: Do a dRP / FGCM flavour of this as well.

Wrap Schlafly's code - no poking at the inards, just the interface. CTS has not looked at this for a while. CTS could start by looking into this.

LPG: Where do we think we need to be in Y1

EB: Need to run AP in crowded fields - requirement in commissioning

JB: Build coadds in CFs  - always been a stretch goal, stay engaged with community so that they have something to try to make things better. Stretch goal for DR1. But not a stretch goal fo AP in Y1

CTS: Do not want this to take up our time in the runup to DR1 - hand a lot to the community to make progress. Cannot take high priority circa DR1 proecssing

  • Yusra AlSayyad will look to see if there is any effort to help on option 1
