Project/Science Updates
  • A restructuring of the Project Office and  SITCOM will be announced in the next few weeks to address the changing focus of the project towards commissioning activities and to backfill positions vacated by Steve K's departure.
  • Camera cold system : Since early 2020  there have been problems with the cold refrigeration system (vapor compression system). It exhibited instabilities and was unable to maintain the maintain the temperature at the level needed. There was a long saga to address this though 2020 and eventually is was fixed in 2021,  ran for 10 weeks until Dec 2021 when the instabilities returned.  They shut the system down in early 2022, flushed and cleaned the system and restarted the EO testing – but the instabilities returned again. An alternative system has been developed in the meantime (pumped coolant system). Given the continued instabilities with the vapor compression system, the R&D timeline for the pumped coolant system has been stepped up. Risks in both development and operation of the pumps coolant system have been identified. Last week the project took the decision to proceed with focusing  on the alternate, pumped coolant system. The project will conduct an  external review on 28 March 2022 to review the path forward above including technical approach, risk, hazards, cost and schedule.
  • STAR-LITE: proposal for a mission to place absolutely calibrated flux source in orbit to help calibrate our data. Idea been around for a long time. A proposal is going ahead, Some Rubin folks are involved.
  • Open position for a program officer in DOE/HEP office - responsible for telescope/astrophysics facility operations. Will be a key person for us in Operations so pass it on to anyone you know who might be interested.
  • PST future planning - RSP talk requested in early April as a PST SC chairs talk (Leanne/Gregory) and an update on the status of difference imaging (Eric)  in August
  • LSST@Europe starting to think about a hybrid meeting later this year, October timeframe.
  • RHL says this is a good move, much simpler system.
  • Camera will have to be modified before shipping.
  • Impact on comcam schedule? Complicated, second order effects. Finite number of people, so might be impacted by available effort. Comcam might be on sky longer, unless that's eaten up by other schedule issues.
  • Subaru coolant was glycol, more corrosive to Al than the Dynalene planned for Rubin. Subaru coolant leak was room temperature, not -50ºC planned for Rubin.
  • RHL: calibration satellite would be lovey but not critical. Proposal, not gone in yet.
  • Is there a date for the RSP SciChairs-PST meeting? Not official yet.
    • Melissa: User's committee might benefit from being able to attend.
    • Steve: There will be another PST-SciChairs meeting for the chairs to present what they're up to, might be good for Users Committee.
Follow up on DPDD column revision

Following up on a discussion at 2018-11-05 DM SST F2F Agenda and Meeting notes, (DPDD Table Review) to review all columns in the Source & DIASource table and decide whether to remove or move to a different table.

Proposed path forward will be presented  before moving to LCR

  • RHL and Leanne have reviewed this recently.
  • Wording of the diaSource detection time is ambiguous, can be tightened up.
  • Camera hasn't developed shutter timing to focal plane position model (Tony told Robert this), Steve will look in to it.
    • Steve confirms the Camera still plans to deliver this, informed by measurements that can be taken once the Camera is integrated at SLAC. Now would be a good time to confirm the details of what is needed: Andy Rasmussen will write up the plan, and DM should then confirm the plan matches the need. ETA on the plan would be early May.
    • Could measure with asteroids.
      • Steve Ritz Work with DM and Camera to develop plans for delivering a shutter position-vs-time model
  • GPDF: In addition to this, we need some science-based proposal for what the Visit and CcdVisit tables should contain.
    • Need to write down the science drivers.
    • DP0.2 is producing outputs for these tables. Unclear if felis files exist.

Status of Compressed PVI updates
Where are we at with Requirements on compressed PVIs? -  See discussions and task at dm-sst meeting notes 2021-01-11.  I don’t thinks this was completed?
  • Big picture question on compression is already settled, just need to flow that down to requirements on the systems that need to be built to make it happen.
  • Hope to have this written by next meeting.
RSP Test Plans
  • Have a milestone associated with readiness for DP0.2.
  • When is CET planning on for opening up DP0.2 to delegates? Not really CET's plan, but released on June 30th. Milestone is marked as September in P6, some sort of error.
  • Would like to do a formal test before opening to delegates. There was a placeholder test plan in Jira, LVVC-167. GPDF started to fill this out. Main focus of 0.2 is image services, so pulled in the image-related test cases in Jira, and none of the test cases had test scripts written for them.
  • 1:1 Requirement-to-test case-to-test script mapping is a little unrealistic, more natural to write a single test case that satisfies multiple requirements. Might have to discard the 1:1 test cases.
    • Confer with Austin and Jeff.
  • CET is looking to hire someone from SLAC to do RSP user acceptance testing.
    • More on the validation side.
