NET Action Items Status

Reminder: Work on your action items: International Communications (aka Long-Haul Networks)

Network activities schedule (subject to COVID19 impacts):

January - Continued work on  Rubin Observatory Network Verification Plan (including JIRA).

February - Completed draft  Rubin Observatory Network Verification Plan (including JIRA).

March - Scheduled Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-Verification Review for May 18 - 19

April - Prepare for Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-Verification Review.  Submit LSST Change Request to update LSE-78 Rubin Observatory Network Design (including Chilean, International, and US networks), and related milestones in PMCS.   Complete LDM-732 Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-verification Baseline.

May - Complete FY19, FY20 NET Reports and Technical Document

June - Conduct and respond to actions from Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-Verification Review.  Meet with GlobalNOC re VNOC support.

July  - Pre-Ops Rehearsal 2 testing.

August - Ops Rehearsal 2/Pre-verification testing.

September - Cisco ACI review, Huawei analysis

October - Start Verification Testing, LS restart, LS - SCL 40G upgrade. (hopefully) -

November - Update Rubin Observatory Operations & Management Plan, USDF Selection, CP Restart, Network Contracts and SLAs.

December - Updates on G-NOC service progress, Brazil path (Huawei) options, planning for US Data Facility at SLAC

January - Updates on G-NOC service progress, Brazil path (Huawei) options, planning for US Data Facility at SLAC

February - Agreed to propose NSF to DOE include funding of VNOC and Huawei in the ops proposal / USDF continuing discussing footprints, power cooling.

March - Keep 2x20GB through Chicago during Construction. End of Construction Aug-FY23, would need 2x100 to SLAC.

New processing facility in UK, some data that goes to Europe will go to UK (1/4), likely 75% of data will be processed in Europe so more data will come back, so the 2x10GB link will likely increase 7-7.5GB per year

  Timelines & Milestones Review

<all>

Baseline Milestones Spreadsheet Review and Checkup:

  • LHN connectivity test requirement has been met with PerfSONAR end-to-end measurement tests.  This spreadsheet box should now be green.
  • Network acceptance/verification tests are dependent on completion of migration from Cisco ACI on the Observatory LAN.  In parallel, the structure of the test plan is being worked on by Vera Rubin.
    • Current end-to-end evaluations are Base → Archive, but objective of verification testing is Summit → Archive
    • Current 100GE LHN path still has shared 100GE Jax/Atlanta segment; due to be replaced in March 2023.
    • Permanent US-DF is still under construction, but is receiving LHN data in its interim location, which can support verification testing.
    • Data Management (DM) drives the LHN verification requirements, but verification tests won't necessarily push up into DM levels.

Update on CONUS Networks

CONUS Networks, including ESnet:

  • ESnet is working on a display of their portion of the LHN path.
    • The display will have a public address (ie., be publicly accessible)
    • Still a work-in-progress.  Likely to take several months to complete.
  • Ampath working with Ciena on implementation of Boca <-->Atlanta spectrum:
    • Colo space is the 1st deliverable; currently estimating in March (2023)

Chilean/International Networks Update

Developments in La Serena and end-to-end service to NCSA for upcoming Auxiliary Telescope Traffic and general (internet, mail, voice) traffic

  • Vera Rubin Observatory:
    • ACI migration preparations continue.
    • AuxTel data run in the end of October and beginning of November has used the LHN path.  While data levels have been modest, transfers have gone smoothly.
    • Some flapping noted on La Serena ↔ Santiago LHN primary path.  Reported on Slack channel.
  • REUNA:
    • LHN La Serena ↔ Santiago primary path has been minimally-used as of late due to service provider fiber cuts.   LHN traffic has been transparently carried on the secondary path during these outages.
  • AmLight:
    • The new Buenos Aires ↔ Sao Paulo segment is still being worked on.

USDF - CC-IN2P3 Networks update

Mark Foster

Richard Hughes-Jones

USDF - CC- IN2P3 network:

  • Building construction on the permanent US-DF continues.  Beneficial occupancy is expected in January (2023).  US-DF systems are in operation in their temporary location until the permanent facility is ready.

Other Discussion Topics

By topic

Rubin Observatory Network Verification:

  • <previously covered in meeting notes>

Rubin Observatory Networks, SLAs for Operations:

  • AmLight LHN SLA has a signed contract.  REUNA LHN SLA is being worked on; not signed yet.

Virtual NOC:

Document update status summary

  • No significant progress on updates, including Network Operations & Management document.

Misc:

The LHC community is conducting a series of WAN data movement challenges, preparing for the start of their High-Luminosity LHC era in ~2029.  The next challenge will be in early 2024.  They are attempting to organize network monitoring capabilities to measure the impact of these data challenges on the R&E WAN infrastructure and are looking to see if other large-scale science collaborations would like to be involved.  From a NET perspective, it may be interesting/useful to see what network monitoring tools/services are involved.  At a higher level, the LSST collaboration may or may not want to be involved.  Phil D. will pass this information up to Richard DuBois.
