Update on ESnet agreement

Jeff Kantor

Reminder: Work on your items

Monthly ESNet stakeholder meeting scheduled for   to work out final funding split between LSST DOE and ASCR. Jeff Kantor will report results via lsst-net mailing list (which has changed address, see notice). Costing information provided by Inder Monga.   Steve Kahn said it’s going to happen, just working out the details. 2 x 40G in FY20.  2 x 100G in FY21. Jeff is pushing for beginning of the fiscal year to have service in place.

Julio Ibarra Have a number of service providers identified who can do Miami - ATL and Boca - ATL, have prices, just getting funding lined up, that is pacing item. Jeronimo Bezerra Idea is to get channel that will support 200 G, maybe 300G. New fiber. Installation and paperwork around 6 months.

Network Design and End-to-End Test Plan and QoS planning

Nothing to report.

Discussion Topics

LSST Network SC18 Demonstration:

Successful demonstration announced on project.lsst.org in LSST Digest. Also, Press release drafted by REUNA, could use as a starting point and jointly revise. How to accommodate different perspectives (Chile, multiple FIU experiments, etc.)? Multiple partner press releases, or a joint release. All NET members should examine and comment. Jeronimo wants to recognize other people who helped with the LSST demo.

Technical report to describe experiment and configuration as we did with December 2017 demo. It should be easy to do by revising Demo Plan documents. Include Grafana graphs.

LSST Network Engineering Meeting April 18, 2019 Santiago

Proposed Agenda items:

  • Goal: work on the NET agenda over the next few weeks.
  • Documentation - How IPs assigned, Vlans, firewall, ... There’s a security group at NCSA asking for the above information. Data Center in La Serena is coming online in 2019. NCSA team prepping for when to move equipment into this data center. NCSA will be involved in security at the base station, they are asking Matt for taps and other active equipment that should be purchased. NCSA will be configuring and packaging equipment to then send to LSST DC in LS. Documents LSE-78 and 309 are high level documents. Luis Coral is documenting more details on site. Detailed design documentation. REUNA has documentation on the DWDM system that’s not in LSST documents. Some REUNA documentation has been provided through deliverables. Some of the information NCSA is requesting could be in those documents. Recommendation: spend time before workshop and at the workshop to improve the documentation.
  • Virtual NOC - What is the VNOC, what are the tools? Need a good solid implementation by end of FY19.
  • ESnet and Miami/BR - ATL
  • QoS, E2E Testing - Now have equipment in Chile to support testing. Put lab config into production.
  • 2019 Demonstration
  • (Suggestions...)

Should this be 1 day or 2? Work agenda until next NET meeting then decide.

Can everyone make it to Santiago or do we need a North American venue as well and good video connection between? If so, probably not Miami, since most FIU people will be in Santiago. Jeff will be in Chile as well, so maybe not Tucson.

Should we plan for a subteam of the NET to go to La Serena (e.g. Matt, Jeronimo)?

Can other sources of funding be identified to ease burden on LSST budget, particularly for those also going to SAACC?

We should invite ESnet.
