Project/Science Updates

Apologies for this meeting falling on "meeting free" week - I will endeavour to make sure that does not happen in future

First light momentum building meeting

  • Several people had a meeting with Heidi Hammel from AURA HQ to discuss how to build momentum towards first light in the public sphere using press releases, popular science articles, social media.
  • Strongly advised to start building momentum early  and not wait til "the day  public need to be primed to be excited about first images.
  • Create short high-level stories about everything in the LSST science book
  • Exercise the processes to be ready to release at first light with everything in hand and prepared
  • When we release the first images, reporters will want to reference previous relevant work - make sure that is available
  • Move away from the "expert" paradigm where one "expert" presents everything and towards a "community" paradigm with a broader program involving lots of young people
  • EPO will play a major role, as will SLAC and NOIRLab
  • Meet again in a month

PST meeting 2023-03-29:

  • Rubin music – idea to commission some music and have a concert in La Serena.  Make a video that involves the people and hardware coming together over time with science -- discussing various composers.

Debrief of the schedule workshop

Debrief of the schedule workshop from last week and implications for DM. We will have a related discussion on milestones for DP1 on 2023-04-24 DM-SST Agenda and Meeting Notes

  • Overall the project has seen a 3 month slip since the previous schedule workshop in November 2022
    • SLAC work stoppage 2023-01-03/ – 01/04 - SLAC is now back in full operations, Camera expected to ship in early October
    • 2) emergent issues with the TMA commissioning from 2022/12 – 2023-03. TMA has now been declared "substantially complete" allowing us to move on to the the next phase of system integration. Rubin now has control of the TMA.
    • 3) infrastructure issues, particularly backup power impacted commissioning efforts - new generator expected for end April
  • New schedule will be presented at the AHM next week

RFC/LCR for shear estimationWe have a plan agreed with the DESC ... next steps?

This is good to go to RFC now following convergence on the PR with DESC members Matthew Becker  and Erin Sheldon.

  •  Jim Bosch Submit RFC for per-object shear estimates as per DPDD PR
Grouping of data products from  older DRs into tarballs on tape Jim Bosch

Topic request from Kian-Tat Lim  – how should we group data products into larger tarballs when we put them on tape?
The current DR's product will be on spinning disk, so we're talking about raws and all preserved data products from older data releases.

What are the use cases for retrieving data products from older data releases?  How big do the tarballs need to be in terms of numbers of data products of various types (target size is around 100 GB).

Deferred to DM-SST on 2023-05-08
