NET Action Items Status

Reminder: Work on your action items: International Communications (aka Long-Haul Networks)

Network activities schedule (subject to COVID19 impacts):

January - Continued work on  Rubin Observatory Network Verification Plan (including JIRA).

February - Completed draft  Rubin Observatory Network Verification Plan (including JIRA).

March - Scheduled Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-Verification Review for May 18 - 19

April - Prepare for Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-Verification Review.  Submit LSST Change Request to update LSE-78 Rubin Observatory Network Design (including Chilean, International, and US networks), and related milestones in PMCS.   Complete LDM-732 Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-verification Baseline.

May - Complete FY19, FY20 NET Reports and Technical Document

June - Conduct and respond to actions from Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-Verification Review.  Meet with GlobalNOC re VNOC support.

July  - Pre-Ops Rehearsal 2 testing.

August - Ops Rehearsal 2/Pre-verification testing.

September - Cisco ACI review, Huawei analysis

October - Start Verification Testing, LS restart, LS - SCL 40G upgrade. (hopefully) -

November - Update Rubin Observatory Operations & Management Plan, USDF Selection, CP Restart, Network Contracts and SLAs.

December - Updates on G-NOC service progress, Brazil path (Huawei) options, planning for US Data Facility at SLAC

Update on CONUS Networks

CONUS Networks, including ESnet:

Paul W. reported that ESnet had done some preliminary planning on diverse paths between Atlanta and SLAC, and showed a figure of one potential configuration.  Current understanding is that implementation should be relatively straightforward.  Use of the ESnet trans-Atlantic links for the IN2P3 ↔ US Data Facility was also thought to not be an issue from a traffic load perspective.

Cristian S. reported that the ESnet links between Atlanta & StarLight would remain in place for now (through commissioning phase?).  Matt K. reported that NCSA remains funded through 10/2021 for construction/commissioning network activities.

Chilean/International Networks Update

Developments in La Serena and end-to-end service to NCSA for upcoming Auxiliary Telescope Traffic and general (internet, mail, voice) traffic:

Christian S. outlined the rough schedule for cameras reaching the summit:  commissioning camera in late Dec/Jan, and main camera in summer time frame.  Deployment of the main camera on the telescope will be significantly later.

Christian S. reported that approval had been given for the fiber needed for the diverse backup link between the Base and Santiago, but there now existed a facility issue which might necessitate removal of that fiber.  While the AURA backup link is still there, Jeff K suggested this issue should be escalated to upper management.

NCSA - CC-IN2P3 Networks update

Unknown User (kollross)

Richard Hughes-Jones

Stuart McLellan

NCSA - CC- IN2P3 network:

Matt K. talked about a cost issue with movement of data from IN2P3 into the Google cloud deployment of the Interim Data Facility.  The data needs to be moved from IN2P3 to NCSA, and then on to Google Cloud to avoid additional costs.

Richard HJ & Stuart M. are confident they have solutions for IN2P3 connectivity to the US Data Facilities, regardless of whether or where they might need to connect to ESnet for moving data to/from SLAC.

Jeff K. said traffic levels for IN2P3 ↔ US Data Facility data movement should initially be ~10Gb/s initially, and increase ~5Gb/s annually.

Other Discussion Topics

By topic

Rubin Observatory Network Verification:

Cristián Silva:  Cristian S. has assumed responsibility for completion of the network verification testing.  Work is in progress.

Richard HJ volunteered to set up performance measurement testing with NSCA and/or SLAC, although this is not part of the formal LHN verification testing.

Rubin Observatory Networks, SLAs for Operations:

Jeff Kantor The Operations & Management Plan and associated SLAs are still on track to be updated after the 1st of the year.

Virtual NOC:

Jeff Kantor :  The Global NOC provided 5-yr cost quote.  Costs are essentially flat, with a 3%/yr increase.  Proposal has been advanced to VRO management, with recommendation to fund this service, if feasible.

Network Security:

Jeff Kantor  :  Document with technical recommendations on networking options for bypassing Huawei equipment in Brazil was presented at NSF (and DOE) VRO quarterly review on Dec 7.  Option 2 (AmLight extension) was presented as the preferred option.  Options are now under consideration at NSF level.

Other businessAny

SAACC (virtual) is tentatively proposed for April 13-14; corresponding face-to-face NET meeting (also virtual...) tentatively proposed for April 15-16.  Since NET meeting will be virtual, the option to hold it at another time is on the table.  For now, the NET meeting remains tentatively for April 15-16.
