Updates/Information

Updates from PST F2F meeting and directions for DM Science:

DM-Camera-Commissioning bootcamp

  • We need to decide whether we go with G3 or G2 middleware. There are pros and cons; it would be a pity to train the Camera team on G2 when we will move to G3 on the order of months, on the other hand, do we want to take the risk of running a bootcamp on immature/unstable G3 middleware. We need to know what tasks will be run at the bootcamp to decide which version of the middleware to use.
  • Dataset to be used needs to be decided. The bootcamp will probably be based around Camera team 'runs' for which data already exist

DM/Commissioning Interactions:

  • Commissioning have expressed more of a desire to get involved with DM work. We need to identify areas where they can contribute:
    • Multi-way matcher, can Keith help here?
    • Some commissioning team members are keen to get involved in developing test scripts. Michael Wood-Vasey suggests starting with a few and reviewing.
    • Michael Wood-Vasey suggests that as part of the commissioning bootcamp they could help to write write out requirements such as: flats should be good to <X> level - we don't have requirements for that.
    • Simon Krughoff requests commissioning notebooks for early commissioning, i.e what will they do or run.
  • Simon Krughoff will communicate the list of tasks to be worked on at the November bootcamp so the SST can decide on the best middleware strategy.
  • SST to decide based on bootcamp tasks, what middleware functionality is needed and which version should be used.
DESC SRD

Robert and Michael will summarize the DESC SRD v1

Postponed to 2018-11-02 give Michael and Robert more time. Also linked to PST-68 - Getting issue details... STATUS

Open actions

See list below

Camera bootcamp preparation and data transfers to NCSA has priority and so some actions have slipped:

  • Michael Wood-Vasey is sending the document with the proposed vocabulary to Brian and Austin - will circulate following approval
  • DES/Gaia access patterns moved to November F2F meeting - Camera data transfers takes priority
  • Glossary technology pushed by 2 weeks.
  • All actions concerning the LSP design review will be reviewed again and rescheduled/rescoped
  • DM-11525 : Eric Bellm will try to talk to Mario Juric next week
  • Simon Krughoff will look at data representation for DESC DC2 next week
Review of DPDD-related issues

Deferred from 2018-09-14 meeting:

Large edits:

  • do we want curved trail? -> footnote
    • See end of section 3.2.1: "Some fast-moving, trailed, sources may be due to passages of nearby asteroids. Their trails may exhibit significant curvature. While we do not measure the curvature directly, it can be inferred by examining the length of the trail, the trailed model covariance matrices, and the adaptive shape measures. Once curvature is suspected, the users may fit curved trail models to the cutout provided with the alert."
    • Follow up with Mario and SSSC?
  • do we want to fit a gaussian convolved with PSF to each DIASource?

Leftovers from Colin's Minutes for 2016-03-23: (Colin Slater )

  • From the SAC: Alerts only include footprints for the detection band; is that enough?
  • SAC: do we need more than 30 days of precovery fluxes for new DIASources? ZI: yes, 30 days is only about two data points in a given band and we don't know colors for transients
  • ZI: science case for moving variable stars: how do we get LCs and pm/parallax?
  • Sophisticated matching of DIAObjects to 3 nearest Objects: might want to do the nearest star and the nearest galaxy, and the most probable object
  • ZI: negative fluxes

Studies for Colin Slater Melissa Graham

  • do we care about direction of NEO motion?
  • do we care about curved trails? (see note in large edit above)
  • moving variable star: a bias in motion due to flux=const.? (see science case for moving variable stars above)

Reviewed by Colin & Leanne after the meeting

  • Colin Slater to follow up with Lynne Jones about getting an estimate for the number of expected sources/ night that might warrant the computation of curved trail

Follow up from Mario: Discussions with Steve Chesley and the MPC concluded that curved trail fitting was not something that any other surveys had needed, and very unlikely that LSST will need it.

"do we need more than 30 days of precovery fluxes for new DIASources?" → Added to ticket DM-15605 - Getting issue details... STATUS

"Sophisticated matching of DIAObjects to 3 nearest Objects: " → Already included in DPDD section and is requirements DMS-REQ-0271 and DMS-REQ-0002

  • Colin Slater to follow up with Mario on NEO motion  → Added to DM-16167 - Getting issue details... STATUS
