Services

LSST is responsible for delivering 100+ services to the project team and facility users.

By the Numbers - LSST Services

Of these services;

  • 40 are currently active serving the construction/development team
  • 42 serve as core IT service (e.g. collaboration tools, document management, source code version control)
  • 10 tier 1 services are under development to handle L1 data production
  • 5 tier 1 services are under development to handle L2 data production
  • approximately 60 tier 2 & 3 services underly the delivery of the tier 1 services

See the DM services status page for further information and maintenance/outage information.

DM Documents

Documents that pertain to the Data Management System software are summarized below, and are described in detail in specific pages.

The LSST Project and DMS requirements and design documents are controlled, and are accessible through a special repository (which requires an account). These documents describe the DMS system as it is intended to exist by the end of the LSST construction phase.

Test documents are produced in LaTeX, however, since the test cases shall be related with the requirements, and since SE is working to integrate JIRA with Magic Draw, the plan is to generate Test Specifications and Test Reports from information gathered from JIRA. In order to do this, the Test Management for Jira plugin will be used (by Adaptavist). The list of custom fields required by DM are listed in Test Management Custom Fields. Here described the DM Test Approach

DM Software

The following documents describe the DMS as it exists today, as a functional prototype of the planned system.

LSST DM Software User Guide

The LSST Software User Guide describes how to download, build, and install the LSST Software Stack, how to run the command-line tasks, and how to configure the pipelines to develop your own data reduction pipelines. It also describes the supporting packages and their use. This document is geared towards end-users (e.g., Level 3, Science Collaborations) and Production operators who primarily need to run the code over large sets of data. Developers and advanced users who need to know both how to run the LSST Software and how to build on top of it should also read the LSST DM Developer Guide.

LSST DM Developer Guide

The LSST DM Developer Guide documents the processes and capabilities available to LSST DM staff developers. This includes the available machines hardware, the development procedures for planned changes (the version control system, tickets, reviews, merging, etc.), how continuous integration operates, data challenges, etc. This will be the second document a new LSST/DM developer will want to read.

Project Management and Planning

LSST DM Release Development

The LSST DM Release Development material on Confluence is obsolete, and exists only for reference purposes. For details on current release practices and procedures, refer to:

  • LDM-564: Data Management Releases for Verification/Integration
  • LDM-672: LSST Software Release management
  • SQR-016: Stack Release Playbook
  • DMTN-106: DM Release Process
LSST DM Project Organization

Data Management Organization documents key facets of the organization and charter of the Data Management project within LSST. The DM Organization and Charter is further elaborated in LDM-294. This page defines the overall organization DM into Lead Institutions/Teams, and cross-functional oversight teams and working groups.

LSST DM Communications
Data Management uses a variety of communication methods to stay informed, be connected and have our voices heard, including: google hangouts, forums, listServs, video chats, conference calls and group calendars. Also included are a few links to frequently accessed source and document repositories.  Communication and Links describes the access mechanisms for each.
