Weekly meeting of the DM-SST to discuss scientific aspects of the Data Management System

Discussion items

ItemWhoNotesConclusions and action items
Data Rights
  • Contributions from international partners hasn't been as much as was hoped for.
  • Going to the agencies starting in February to see if they would support opening up data rights and covering the whole operations budget. Would give the US greater control of operations; wouldn't need to ask the partners.

Snaps

PST is considering the implications of going to single-snap visits, would like DM to evaluate the impact on processing (e.g. cosmic ray removal)

  • Gregory et al.: We already support single-snaps.
  • Jim: Higher risk that two-snap processing will difficult than single-snap processing will be difficult.
  • Strong chorus from SST saying we already evaluated single-snaps at the time of LCR-687
  • Leanne Guy feed this back to PST by or at next PST F2F meeting.
Updates from DM CCB

Proposal from DMCCB that at each SST meeting we review open RFC to decide whether they require CCB approval (flagged)

  • Eric: Uncomfortable with having semi-unannounced-change-controlled items. Would be better to be clear about what was or wasn't controlled.
  • This sentiment was shared by some of the DMCCB, but others strongly wanted further control over RFC process.

  • Looks like this will be happening regardless of SST's uncomfortableness.
Information item: ellipticity residual requirements

See LCR-1554, "Remove Duplicate Requirement in OSS"

  • Gregory Dubois-Felsmann prepare to fix the basic flow down problem on ~week timescale, so LCR can proceed
  • Michael Wood-Vasey consult with DESC WL experts to understand if they have a better set of metrics that could be used in these requirements. Timescale ~month after DESC meeting

DM-18499 - Getting issue details... STATUS

Treatment of cosmic rays

DESC/DES are very concerned that we are interpolating CRs (even though we mask them). Do we interpolate over them? Suggestion is that we put together a short TN to describe our postion,

DESC is trying to ensure that the DC2 simulations and subsequent DM processing are doing the right thing. Are the CRs being detected properly? Are bleed trails being detected properly?

  • Robert Lupton hold a technically-focused telecon with the relevant people in DESC, along with a short writeup
DM-19382 - Getting issue details... STATUS
Focal Plane Orientation

DM focal plane orientation differs from that of the camera engineering diagrams and it causes no end of confusion. Aaron Roodman is OK with all LSST images being in "DM" orientation with bleed columns vertical but (years ago) they did not want to change all their engineering drawings. Corner raft orientation in obs_lsst should be checked.

  • Electronic orientation was agreed with the Camera team long ago.
  • Question of how DM represents LSST corner raft detectors, some of which are rotated from the readout orientation of the rest of the camera.
  • HSC always reorients detectors to electronic-orientation, even edge/corner detectors that are physically 90º rotated from the other chips.
  • Create a ticket to investigate a possibleissue in the how the phosim-repackager rearranges the data Simon Krughoff
Alerts Key NumbersMelissa Graham

Melissa has a proposed final drafts for the RFC and DMTN-102 for the alerts key numbers document:
