Context

The LSST-DM effort, even during the current construction phase, has a very large and complex IT infrastructure.  The vast majority of our IT assets are under automated configuration management (CM).  In June 2017, the Summit-Base ITC Design Tiger Team adopted Puppet as the de-facto standard tool for this job.   Adoption of common tools and methods for CM facilitates immense effort savings, consistency across the infrastructure, better cyber security, policy & standards compliance and better service delivery.  CM infrastructure and processes are essential to operating & deploying any large IT infrastructure.

The effort to build a consolidated CM infrastructure for LSST is a joint effort between the Summit-Base ITC Design, PDAC and infrastructure working groups.
