NET Action Items Status

Reminder: Work on your action items: International Communications (aka Long-Haul Networks)

Network activities schedule (subject to COVID19 impacts):

January - Continued work on  Rubin Observatory Network Verification Plan (including JIRA).

February - Completed draft  Rubin Observatory Network Verification Plan (including JIRA).

March - Scheduled Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-Verification Review for May 18 - 19

April - Prepare for Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-Verification Review.  Submit LSST Change Request to update LSE-78 Rubin Observatory Network Design (including Chilean, International, and US networks), and related milestones in PMCS.   Complete LDM-732 Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-verification Baseline.

May - Complete FY19, FY20 NET Reports and Technical Document

June - Conduct and respond to actions from Rubin Observatory Networks Pre-Verification Review.  Meet with GlobalNOC re VNOC support.

July  - Pre-Ops Rehearsal 2 testing.

August - Ops Rehearsal 2/Pre-verification testing.

September - Cisco ACI review, Huawei analysis

October - Start Verification Testing, LS restart, LS - SCL 40G upgrade. (hopefully) -

November - Update Rubin Observatory Operations & Management Plan, USDF Selection, CP Restart, Network Contracts and SLAs.

December - Updates on G-NOC service progress, Brazil path (Huawei) options, planning for US Data Facility at SLAC

January - Updates on G-NOC service progress, Brazil path (Huawei) options, planning for US Data Facility at SLAC

February - Agreed to propose NSF to DOE include funding of VNOC and Huawei in the ops proposal / USDF continuing discussing footprints, power cooling.

March - Keep 2x20GB through Chicago during Construction. End of Construction Aug-FY23, would need 2x100 to SLAC.

New processing facility in UK, some data that goes to Europe will go to UK (1/4), likely 75% of data will be processed in Europe so more data will come back, so the 2x10GB link will likely increase 7-7.5GB per year

August - In response to previous meeting IP6 discussions, FIU is preparing an impact analysis of adopting IPv6 on its in-band network telemetry (INT) investigations.

Update on CONUS Networks

CONUS Networks, including ESnet:

Ghisella is working with Cristian to get CONUS networking budget buttoned up.

ESnet effort largely tied up in completing its packet core transition to ESnet6.

Chilean/International Networks Update

Developments in La Serena and end-to-end service to NCSA for upcoming Auxiliary Telescope Traffic and general (internet, mail, voice) traffic

Question about COVID situation on the summit work.  Jeff believes onsite activity has resumed, but Cristian would know the most current status.

Auxtel run in July was successful.

The status of the fiber connection between Santiago and Porto Alegre - [1] transponder and rack installed in BA; [2] two Ciena transponders sent to Reuna; [3] pending RNP work to complete PA to SAO.

Jeromino reported testing redundancy with a new BGP config. From Rubin to AMPATH and NCSA is complete.  Failover path now set to use 40G backup circuit between La Serena & Santiago.  Still some optimization to be done.

Julio Costanzo also provided an update on the redundancy testing.  PerfSONAR nodes used to test thruput, with 10Gb/s achieved.  Further redundancy testing with 40GE DTN planned when Renata is back.  Local network redundancy test was successful.

Jeronimo also reported the testbed connection with Google Cloud was no longer in place.  There never was any appreciable traffic into/out of the Interim Data Facility.  IDF is still in use for software development/testing.  Julio suggested that perhaps KT could provide an update of the IDF at a future meeting.

Julio will send email to Cristian for a general status update, and include the suggestion for KT to brief the NET on the IDF.

USDF & NCSA - CC-IN2P3 Networks update

Unknown User (kollross)

Mark Foster

Richard Hughes-Jones

Stuart McLellan

USDF & NCSA - CC- IN2P3 network:

Mark F reported on SLAC/ESnet planning for transition to ESnet6, noting that the LH.N connection will be on a dedicated circuit.

SLAC is currently doing prep work for tape storage expansion to accommodate the US-DF.

Mark also reported on planned discussions between ESnet (Paul), Jeronimo, and SLAC networking staff to work out the details of the SLAC/LHN interface.

Other Discussion Topics

By topic

Rubin Observatory Network Verification:

Nothing to report.

Rubin Observatory Networks, SLAs for Operations:

Jeff reported a scheduled meeting next week with Rubin management to review/approve SLA templates.  Jeff and Julio will discuss changes to the previously discussed NET review of the SLAs that affect AmLight.

Virtual NOC:

Nothing to report.  No funding until start of operations (FY24).

Document update status summary

LSE-78 update has been submitted, but waiting for UK agreement before finalizing.

LSE-49 is waiting on a number of updates, principally figures.  US-DF/SLAC connectivity will be updated once details are worked out.

Operations & Management Plan (document 11918).  Jeff is waiting on the NET co-chairs to submit a baseline version.  Target is end of this month,  Jeff wants this update completed prior to his retirement date (end of Sept.)
